Mitchell J. Brown
Director of the Department of Public
Safety
Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman appointed Mitchell J. Brown as the
Director of the Department of Public Safety on April 24, 2000. As a
member of Mayor Coleman’s cabinet, Director Brown oversees the
operation of the Division of Police, Division of Fire, Division of
Support Services, and the License and Weights and Measures sections.
The Department of Public Safety is the City’s largest department,
with a $456 million budget and approximately 3,900 employees.
Brown served as Director of the Department of Public Safety for the
City of Cleveland from 1986-1989, overseeing 3,300 employees. His
special response zone car program resulted in a 38 percent increase
in arrests and a 17 percent increase in assignments handled. His
other accomplishments include enhancing the 911 system, implementing
a comprehensive management training program and upgrading the
Division of Fire Hazmat Unit. Under Brown’s leadership, the first
police helicopter and canine unit s were created.
From 1980-1986, Mitchell Brown served as the Commissioner for
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in the Department of Public Safety
in Cleveland. He developed and implemented the Paramedic Training
institute, created the Advanced Life Support Program and
successfully managed the transition from a federally funded program
to a City of Cleveland program.
